The company plans to inject A$110m ($73.6m) into Huon’s Whale Point farm in Tasmania, focusing on building a salmon hatchery capable of rearing seven million fish. This project marks JBS’s entry into the seafood industry after acquiring Huon in 2021. Headquartered in Hobart, Tasmania, Huon is the second-largest salmon farming business in Australia. The Whale Point project is designed to enable Huon to prolong the salmon farming cycle in tanks, allowing the fish more time to mature before being transferred to sea-based pens. Scheduled to commence next year, the construction phase will create 150 jobs, adding to Huon’s current workforce of 1,000 employees in Australia. Henrique Batista, Huon’s CEO, highlighted that “salmon will spend most of its production cycle on land thanks to the strengthening of our installed capacity.” Additionally, the investment will boost the water reuse rate at the facility to 99%. A cohort of more than 130 major companies and financial institutions, including Nestlé, Danone, and Unilever, have urged global leaders to adopt and enforce policies to “halt and reverse nature loss this decade.” This call to action is made under the Business for Nature organization. The statement, which includes the Biodiversity Plan, precedes the upcoming UN Biodiversity Conference scheduled from October 21 to November 1, 2024, in Cali, Colombia. Among the five recommendations outlined in the statement are policies to ensure that business and financial entities protect and restore ecosystems, sustainable resource management to reduce environmental impacts, and the integration of nature in decision-making processes. The group also advocates for aligning financial flows towards a nature-positive, net zero, and equitable economy, as well as Nestlé and Danone unite to urge global leaders to take action on biodiversity depletion NEWS Lactalis to invest in new dairy facility in Colombia Lactalis has confirmed its plan to invest €3m ($3.2m) in one of its manufacturing facilities in Colombia, specifically in Medellín, Antioquia. The facility produces UHT milk, cream, and dairy desserts and the investment is aimed at modernizing the plant. The company intends to increase the capacity for UHT milk storage, transition to automated machinery for pasteurized dairy products, and update disinfection and sterilization lines, as well as move heating systems from carbon-emitting boilers to gas. This investment initiative was revealed in an interview with Juan Velásquez, the CEO of Lactalis’ operations in Colombia. He mentioned that this €3m investment in Medellín is part of a larger €4m project for Colombia this year. Furthermore, Lactalis has committed to investing an additional €5m annually across its sites in Colombia. Improvements made to Kronen GS 20 belt cutting machine Kronen has enhanced its GS 20 belt cutting machine to improve hygiene, enhance operational safety, and reduce costs for customers in the food manufacturing industry. The machine, a staple in Kronen’s product lineup, is capable of processing up to 4,000 kg per hour of various food products, including fruit, vegetables, and salad leaves. In order to maintain optimal cutting results over time, certain parts of the machine need to be replaced periodically. Previously, the roller bearing support holders required complete replacement, but Kronen has revised them so that only the bearing axle support bars need to be replaced, resulting in significant cost savings. These new parts are compatible with existing models, allowing customers to benefit from long-term savings. Kronen has also made improvements to the machine’s hygienic design by reducing the number of screw fastenings for the belt and knife box, improving product discharge, and redesigning the blade flange. Furthermore, the swivel arm has been upgraded to eliminate hollow spaces and reduce the need for screw fastenings, improving operational safety by preventing unintentional movement of the arm. In response to growing consumer demand for transparency in ingredient origins and production methods, OAL has developed a solution that incorporates inline camera technology to verify the integrity of QR/2D codes printed on packaging. This initiative, driven by Tesco to reduce food waste in the supply chain, allows packs to be scanned by smartphones at the point of sale, providing consumers with more detailed information than traditional barcodes can offer. This innovative software enables traceability and manufacturing data to be included in on-pack 2D codes, enhancing the consumer experience by identifying allergens, improving food safety, and reducing food waste by up to 40%. OAL’s solution facilitates the creation, inline printing, and verification of QR/2D codes containing essential information such as best before dates, allergens, and batch data, in line with the GS1 Digital Link standard. According to Jake Norman, managing director of OAL, “The use of QR codes and GS1 Digital Link expands the utilization of traceability data collected in our automated control systems, providing consumers with the transparency they seek and helping to reduce food waste.” This technology is part of what is being called the ‘second barcode revolution,’ enabling consumers to access detailed product information while helping retailers manage inventory more accurately and prevent expired products from reaching consumers.
