Previously focused on producing powdered milk for various purposes, the company can now expand its product range with the green light from government officials. The company has initiated the next steps to start production of the first batch of infant formula and aims to make the product available for retail distribution nationwide by this summer, as stated in a press release by Canada Royal Milk. “Just Food” has reached out to the company for further details on this development. In 2022 and early 2023, Canada experienced shortages in infant- formula supplies, attributed to nationwide shortages in the US following the closure of an Abbott Nutritionals plant in Michigan due to contamination concerns. In response, the Canadian government allowed temporary imports of formula from Europe to alleviate the pressure on supplies. Vegan labeling campaign raises awareness of allergen risks The FSA has released new research showing that 62% of individuals with food allergies mistakenly believe that products labeled vegan are safe for consumption. This misconception poses a potential risk to those with allergies to milk, eggs, fish, crustaceans, or molluscs. The FSA’s ‘Vegan Food and Allergens Campaign’ aims to raise awareness about the importance of checking for precautionary allergen statements, such as ‘may contain,’ on vegan products to ensure safety. Having expanded operations, Zafron Foods took delivery of their third shrink wrapping line from Yorkshire Packaging Systems (YPS). After winning a new contract, Zafron needed to boost output. With two existing YPS lines running efficiently and reliably, they turned to YPS again. “We’ve had a great relationship with YPS. When needing to increase output further, they were the natural choice,” said Jack Kenny, Zafron MD. The new side feed shrink wrapper handles varying product collations for Zafron’s mayonnaise, sauces, dressings and chutneys. Supplied formats range from sachets to pallets for customers like artisan delis and large food companies. The line accepts single lane products, bundles into required collations, then shrink wraps. Fully integrated with upline bottling, sensors ensure wrapper and filler synchronization - if the wrapper stops, the filler automatically pauses. “We modified the infeed to perfectly align with their filler and facility footprint,” stated Glyn Johnson, YPS MD. “We’re pleased Zafron is satisfied with the results.” Zafron Foods Triple Up with YPS Packaging Lines FOODANDBEVERAGE.BUSINESS • 5 NEWSFOODANDBEVERAGE.BUSINESS • 6 Ishida strengthens African foothold with NPS purchase Ishida Europe has recently expanded its presence in the African market by acquiring National Packaging Systems (NPS), a leading South African packaging equipment manufacturer. NPS, established in 1983 and based in Pinetown near Durban, is known for designing and manufacturing high-performance vertical form, fill, and seal machines for various products, including sachets, stick packs, and pillow packs. One of NPS’s strengths lies in its ability to create bespoke packaging systems tailored to each customer’s specific needs. The company serves a diverse customer base in both food and non-food industries, offering solutions for a wide range of products such as sugar, rice, snacks, powders, liquids, and more. Westpak has introduced a groundbreaking packaging innovation, known as ‘HeatWave’, that significantly enhances the heat retention of delivery and takeaway pizzas. This innovative packaging solution creates a raised and aerated platform, reducing heat dissipation through the base of pizza boxes and providing impressive heat retention results. Despite the large UK takeaway and delivery pizza market, there has been a lack of packaging innovation in this sector. The traditional pizza box design has not addressed longstanding issues such as poor heat retention. This leads to a decrease in product quality, customer satisfaction, and brand reputation as pizzas rapidly lose heat while waiting for collection or delivery. The ‘HeatWave’ design is a liner sheet that fits seamlessly into standard cardboard pizza boxes, elevating the pizza base away from the box bottom with its alternating concave and convex domes. This aerated under-layer acts as an effective thermal barrier, reducing heat dissipation and keeping pizzas hotter for longer.
